Walker Government
I extend a warm welcome on behalf of
the City Commission and Staff of the City of Walker. Walker is the home
of approximately 22,000 people who truly exemplify the City Motto: "From
Solid Roots…Strong Branches." Walker is a vibrant and growing community
reflecting a wonderful balance between long term established
neighborhoods, schools, churches, and businesses with new and exciting
developments.
Walker is home to many commercial enterprises from the old family
held businesses such as Bissell, Betz Foundry, and Meijer, to a major
retail corridor on Alpine Avenue. A downtown development authority has
been established in the Standale district which has made significant
improvements to this unique area of the City. Each year, new commercial
and industrial businesses select Walker as their new home.
This commercial and industrial growth is filtered by a commitment to
maintain the family friendly environment that so reflects the City of
Walker. The City is determined to maintain its quality of life for its
residents. A major investment has been made in sidewalks, tree planting,
parks, and the protection of green space. A major portion of the
Millennium Park will be located along the Grand River in Walker.
Walker is also the home to many churches, three public schools
systems, as well as non-public schools. It has a fine library and a
state of the art ice and fitness center. It has a flourishing
relationship with its sister city, Colac, Australia.
The greatest resource of the City is the people. Walker is proud to
be the home of a people known for their concern for their neighbors and
their community. An effort spear headed by Walker City employees has
received national attention for their efforts to assist the victims of
the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack in New York.
We hope you will find this web site useful. It contains a great deal
