The Walker City Commission appoints the Treasurer for the City of Walker. The Treasurer’s office is open to the public between 8am and 5pm every Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. The department is responsible for the administration of the property tax records for parcels located in the City of Walker. Property taxes are billed and collected in two billing cycles per calendar year. The department mails out over 9,000 tax bills per billing cycle. The annual amount of property taxes billed in the 2006 calendar year exceeded $36 million. Property tax payments received by the department are distributed to the appropriate taxing units (schools, county, etc) twice a month. The department is also responsible for the administration and maintenance of all special assessment property records for parcels located in the City of Walker. The department receipts and deposits all monies received by the city to be used in the operations of the city’s various funds. These monies include, but are not limited to, Walker City income taxes, permit fees, state revenue sharing, state highway (Act 51) monies, cable fees, recreation program fees, special assessment payments and court fees. The Treasurer is responsible for the investment of all monies in each of the City’s funds, with the exception of the City’s pension fund. The City Clerk and the City Treasurer are responsible for signing all accounts payable and payroll checks.
